FISH THOKKU – Village Style Fish
Meen Thokku is a traditional village style fish recipe. Thokku is like a semi-gravy recipe. It tastes spicy and little tangy. Interesting point is we are using shallow fried fish in this thokku. Also we are not adding any coconut or tamarind in this recipe. While discussing about Sea food recipes one of friend gave me this recipe. I made it once and it was scrumptious. After that it became one of my favourite recipe. I am using Red snapper (sangara) fish today. You can use any fish with less bones for this recipe.

- Oil – 4 Tbsp
- Salt – as needed

- Clean the fish pieces. Add some turmeric and salt and rest it for 5 min.
- Wash that well and drain the water completely.

- Slit green chilli, peel the onion skin and slice tomatoes.
PROCEDURE :
- Heat oil in a pan for shallow fry. Add the fish pieces.
- Cook for 2 min and flip it. Cook for another 2 min and remove it from oil.
- Heat sesame oil in a pan for making thokku. Add fennel seeds.
- Add garlic, green chilli and red chilli.
- Saute for few seconds. Add onions and curry leaves.
- Cook until golden brown. Add spice powders (red chilli powder, turmeric and coriander powder).
- Combine it once without burning the spice powders. Add tomatoes and salt.
- Cover and cook until tomatoes become soft.
- Mash the tomatoes using a spatula. When oil starts to oozing out on the top add roasted cumin powder.
- Place the shallow fried fish pieces gently and cook for 2-3 min.
- Add some freshly crushed black pepper. Flip the pieces carefully.
- Cook for 2-3 min and turn off the heat.
NOTES :
- Try to use well ripened tomatoes. Because the juices from the tomato will give the semi-gravy consistency. otherwise add little water as needed.
- If you need this recipe in little gravy consistency you can add little water after the tomato gets cooked well.
- Do not fry the fish completely. We will cook it later in the gravy.
- You can use regular onions instead of shallots or baby onions. But shallots give very good taste when you are eating that with rice.
