BADAM HALWA – Almond Dessert

Badam / Almond halwa is a rich and yummy Indian Dessert made using almonds, milk, sugar and ghee. The cooking process is simple and it tastes delicious. This amazing dessert is favourite sweet for many pregnant woman. It is often made during Diwali festival and other important occasions.

  • Almonds – 1 cup
  • Water – for soaking almonds
  • Milk – app. 3/4 cup (for grinding almonds)
  • Sugar – 1 cup
  • Ghee – 3-4 Tbsp
  • Saffron – a pinch
  • Cardamom powder – a pinch


  1. Soak almonds in water for 2-3 hours.
  2. Peel the skin by pressing each almond between thumb and other fingers.
  3. Add saffron to 2 Tbsp warm milk.
  4. Coarsely grind peeled almonds with enough milk. (no measurement needed)


  1. Melt 2 Tbsp ghee over medium heat.
  2. Add almond paste. Mix well.
  3. Add Sugar and combine well. It will become little loose in consistency.
  4. Add saffron milk. Stir all the time. Don’t let the bottom to burn.
  5. After some time you can notice halwa started thickening.
  6. Add 1 Tbsp ghee and combine well.
  7. After it gets absorbed by the halwa add another tbsp of ghee.
  8. Combine well. You can notice the halwa become non-sticky.
  9. Add cardamom powder and combine well.
  10. Turn off the heat when the halwa leaves the sides of the pan.


  • I use 2 tbsp less sugar from 1 cup. You can adjust sweetness according to your taste.
  • No accurate measurement needed for milk.
  • Use long handled spatula.
  • Use homemade fresh ghee for best result.

  1. Yummmyyy i will try this recipe as soon i can and i will write how it was 🙂
    Interestingly almonds is spoken as “badem” in my language ( Bosnian ) and also we prepare old fashion dessert called halwa in Bosnia. But it was made only plain flour and sugar with raisins on top.
    This will be completely new experience to my senses 🙂

    Since there is no ghee available in my country i plan to use best butter brand i could find.

    1. Thank you Emir. You can prepare ghee from butter. Melt butter in a pan over medium heat. First it will melt and starts to boil. Keep eye on it. No need to mix it. At certain time you can notice the butter becomes clear on the top and some layer stick to the pan. Turn off the heat and filter it using a cloth filter. (Put a thin cloth over fine holed filter)Caution-It will be very hot. And your ghee is ready. When it cooled down it will become thick.
