You can prepare this chutney with coconut or without coconut. Both tastes delicious. Today I am posting the chutney with coconut version.

AUTHOR : Dimple                           CUISINE : South Indian
COURSE : Side Course                    YIELD : 2-3 servings

  • Peanut / Groundnut – 1/2 cup
  • Channa dal – 1 Tbsp
  • Urad dal – 1 Tbsp
  • Red chilli – 3
  • Tamarind – 1/2 gooseberry size
  • Coconut – 1/4 cup grated
  • Cumin seeds – 1 Tsp
  • Garlic – 3-4 cloves
  • Salt – as needed
  • Water – as needed

For Tempering :

  • Oil – 1.5 Tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 Tsp
  • Curry leaves – 1 string
  • Hing / Asafoetida – large pinch

  1. Grate/slice coconut.
  2. Peel and chop garlic.

  1. Dry roast groundnuts over low-medium heat until you get good aroma. (app. 5-7 min) Transfer to a plate. Let it cool down.
  2. Dry roast channa dal and ural dal until colour changes to golden brown.
  3. Add red chillies and tamarind to the hot pan and turn off the heat. This helps tamarind to grind easily.
  4. Rub the groundnuts with fingers and blow out the skin. (optional)
  5. Combine everything together. Add coconut, salt, garlic and cumin seeds.
  6. Grind everything together with required water. Adjust chutney consistency as you prefer.
  7. Heat oil in a pan for tempering. Add mustard seeds.
  8. When it stars spluttering, add curry leaves and hing. Turn off the heat.
  9. Pour this tempering on the top of the chutney. Mix well.

  • Roasting groundnuts is very important. If you roast over high heat nuts will become dark outside and will not get roasted inside. So roasting over low-medium helps in even roasting.
  • You can add groundnuts with skin.
  • Instead of adding tamarind to the hot pan, you can even soak tamarind in water 5 min. This also helps it to grind smoothly.
